Alistair McKinney
Alistair McKinney is the 37 year old son of Josie and Frank McKinney. Josie was raised in Kilbirnie and although she left in 1969 to become a military nurse she returned with her husband and 3 children in 1989. Alistair is the eldest of their children and joined the military at the age of sixteen. He served in various countries including N Ireland, Bosnia, Kossovo, South Gorgia, Cyprus, Iraq and finally Afghanistan. It was in Afghanistan in 2006 that Alistair received a gunshot wound to his head. As he was posting sentries, three shots rang out and Alistair sustained a very serious gunshot to his head. The bullet passed through from above his left eye and to above his right ear. He was immediately evacuated to camp Bastion where the skills of the medical teams managed to stabilise him and flew him to Karachi in Pakistan. There the neurological surgeons worked tiredlessly to save his life. He remained in Pakistan for 3 weeks until he was strong enough to be flown back to the UK.
Since returning to the uk he has continued to defy all odds and made a good recovery. The battled against a MRSA infection, TB and had a large abcess on his brain but he had no intention of giving up. His motto then and now is "Failure is not an option" He made very slow progress when he moved to the military rehabilitation centre at Headley court. He has slowly come to terms with the loss of the use of the left side of his body, but never a young man to be defeated he has slowly fought his way back. He is still in rehabilitation in Surrey and making excellent progress. A new all in one leg brace has seen him up on his feet using just a crutch to aid his walking he pushes himself further and further each day. I have now moved into his military accomodation to look after him and my husband Frank returned to work at Hunterston. He travels up and down as often as his job allows. I hope Alistair continues to improve and eventually he will lead an independent life with the minimum help from his carers.
